Glossary

 

Additional Services - Any service which is provided in addition to a standard quotation, such as cranes.

 

Agent - A trading partner employed to effect destination or origin services outside the UK.

 

Airway Bill/Bill of Lading - Documented proof that the goods have been loaded for transportation by air (Airway Bill) or ship (Bill of Lading). A copy is required to provide release of the freight when it arrives at its destination.

 

Customs Clearance - The process of Customs formalities that must be completed at origin, during transit and upon arrival at the destination.

 

Demurrage - A charge imposed for storage while goods are at a port.

 

Destination Agent - A trading partner who will organise freight, transportation and delivery services outside the UK.

 

FAIM - An independent quality assurance standard for international movers.

 

FCL - Full container load (sole use)

 

FIDI - The Federation Internationale des Demenageurs International is an association for international moving companies, who are responsible for quality, integrity, and mutual co-operation for companies who are focused on the intercontinental movement of household effects.

 

Gross Volumetric Weight - The chargeable weight of an individual package

 

LCL - Less than container load – your goods are transported in a sealed wooden case within a shared sea container.

 

Origin Agent - A trading partner who organises packing, collection and freight services for goods being shipped back to the UK.

 

SIT - Storage in transit, a temporary storage location for goods awaiting collection by an airline or ship.
